Synopsis
ACT I – THE SIGNAL (174 Hz)
The opera opens on a mass of dancers, THE ASHEN, moving in synchronized, mechanical patterns to a low droning frequency at 174 Hz. The OPERATOR introduces humanity as beings existing between spirit and physical form. Within the collective, young LESEDI briefly hears a lone cello melody and moves out of step. She makes a fleeting connection with the cellist, CUSTOS, as time momentarily stops. The moment is interrupted. Time resumes. LESEDI returns to the collective movement, choosing to forget what she experienced.
ACT II – PATTERNS: ASPA’S REALM (285 Hz)
The setting shifts to a modern Times Square dominated by screens and digital noise. ASPA appears as a powerful, glamorous figure whose voice and music control the collective. THE ASHEN move in obedience to her rhythm. LESEDI begins to hear a counter melody and briefly encounters CUSTOS among the crowd. As she falls out of sync, ASPA’s control intensifies. THE CUSTODIANS enter and challenge the influence over LESEDI through song. The system fractures. ASPA disappears. LESEDI is left alone, newly aware and isolated.
ACT III – THE ORIGINS
LESEDI enters a dream state and is suspended in a desert-like world. The OPERATOR narrates the history of the CUSTODIANS, ASPA’s rise to power, the collapse of the energetic grid, and CUSTOS’ mission to awaken souls through music. The former ASHEN appear as ancient beings. CUSTOS attempts to reach LESEDI through her dream. A digital clock appears at 3:33 a.m. LESEDI falls and awakens.
ACT IV – BREATH
The world reappears in collapse, blending ancient structures with modern ruins. LESEDI returns as an adult and sings for the first time. She accepts her dual nature and consciously reconnects with CUSTOS. OSWIN appears and joins her. Younger versions of LESEDI appear as the trio unite in song. ASPA’s influence continues to weaken as remembrance strengthens.
ACT V – RELEASE (852 Hz)
LESEDI mourns time lost to fear, shame, and misunderstanding. Supported by OSWIN, CUSTOS, and THE CUSTODIANS, she releases self-suppression and declares her escape. Younger versions of LESEDI and OSWIN dance while their older selves sing in support. LESEDI fully chooses to live her truth.
ACT VI – ASCENSION (963 Hz)
LESEDI, OSWIN, and CUSTOS reunite in a final ascension as the full company appears. THE ASHEN continue moving within their own timeline, though some briefly fall out of sync. Time stands still as the mandala spins. LESEDI acknowledges the collective with compassion before ascending with OSWIN. CUSTOS remains behind, returning to the crowd to begin the cycle again. The OPERATOR appears in human form and closes the work.
Program Note: Frequency Design in LESEDI
LESEDI uses specific sound frequencies as part of its musical and emotional structure. These frequencies are not meant as instructions or effects, but as compositional reference points that help shape the mood, movement, and inner state of the work.
The opera begins with 174 Hz, a low frequency that creates a sense of weight, stillness, and unconscious motion. This sound world supports the opening state of THE ASHEN, whose repetitive movement reflects a lack of awareness.
As LESEDI begins to question her surroundings, the music shifts to 285 Hz, introducing contrast and instability. This frequency supports the tension between external control and emerging inner awareness within ASPA’s realm.
In RELEASE, the score centers on 852 Hz, marking a turning point where LESEDI confronts grief, loss, and truth. The frequency supports emotional clarity and acceptance rather than struggle.
The opera concludes with 963 Hz, the highest frequency used in the work. This sound accompanies LESEDI’s full integration and presence, as time appears to slow and the story resolves into stillness.
Together, these frequencies create a gradual progression across the opera, reinforcing the journey from unconscious pattern to conscious awareness. Their role is atmospheric and structural, supporting the story without interrupting the dramatic experience.
